If I take Avatar of Fire do I still get increased damage from +melee physical, +mace physical +1-Handed physical etc etc or is it only from +elemental damage?

Damage that's converted to another damage type gets bonuses from both damage types.

That mechanic feels wrong to me... It makes converting always better than anything else, no need to think whatsoever...
It's the same as the Iron reflexes keystones. But I don't really want to discuss this again. It would be pointless anyway.

It was changed to that way because the other way was a) unintuitive to many people and b) made damage conversion undesirable in many cases.
If your physical damage is converted to fire damage, it makes sense for that to be increased by fire damage increases, because it is fire damage.
It also makes sense for it to be increased by physical damage increases, because more physical damage means more to convert, which means more fire damage.

Its the only logical way to work (like Mark had explained), and thats the reason why they try to implement some kind of drawback to otherwise overpowered skills.
Special for the Fire Avatar: it may be fooltrusting strong against all others, its useless without a sort of backup against fire-immunes...

except for the fact that there are no fire immunes...

since I'm sure to have seen some foes with fire resistances, I'd bet that there _will_ come also some which are immune, even if they are just still missing in the game.

No type of leeching works for AoF except the support gems (same with spells).
And I hope they don't put in immunes regardless of AoF — it's just a hassle for almost everyone.
There are many good ways of making combat challenging, and that is not one of them. Take a look at Guild Wars.
